Botox Treatment For Excessive Sweating

At the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic we treat problem underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) with Botox. This treatment takes about half an hour, is relatively painless and usually lasts for 10 months or more.

Many people suffer from excessive underarm sweating which can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. Often they have tried a number of deodorants with limited or no success. Some of the stronger antiperspirants which contain aluminium salts can cause itching and skin irritation.

By placing a number of superficial [shallow] injections of Botox into the armpit the amount of sweating can be markedly reduced [and in some cases stopped all together]. Botox targets sweating at its source. Once injected it enters the specific glands in the underarms responsible for excess sweating. There it blocks the release of a chemical that signals the perspiration. After the first treatment the effects of Botox last an average of seven and a half months; however, the duration of effect may vary from person to person. Some people report a reduction in sweating lasting for more than a year.

The procedure is relatively painless and takes about 30 minutes to complete. In some cases we may perform a sweat test first to determine which areas of your underarms are causing the problem.

You should notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating within 4 weeks of your first treatment.

Side effects are usually minimal but you may experience some bruising or swelling of the treated area.

If you decide not to have further treatment there will be no lasting change in the treated areas. The effects of Botox treatment will gradually wear off and your underarm sweating will resume.

The cost of this treatment at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic is NZ$1000 - $1200 depending on the size of the area to be treated and the amount of Botox required for a good result.
